Early Career and BMX Success
Harrie Lavreysen began his cycling journey at the tender age of six as a BMX racer. His early years were marked by numerous Dutch youth championships and a European youth title. However, a severe shoulder injury forced him to abandon his BMX ambitions and embark on a new path in track cycling.
Transition to Track Cycling
In 2016, Lavreysen made the switch to track cycling and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. That year, he finished second in the sprint and earned a bronze medal in the keirin at the UEC European Track Championships.
World Championship Dominance
The year 2020 proved to be Lavreysen's breakout year. At the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin, he became a triple world champion, claiming gold in the sprint, keirin, and team sprint (alongside Jeffrey Hoogland, Roy van den Berg, and Matthijs Büchli). This success marked the beginning of his dominance in world cycling.
Olympic Glory
The pinnacle of Lavreysen's career came at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He captured two gold medals, one in the individual sprint and the other in the team sprint (with Hoogland, van den Berg, and Büchli). These victories cemented his status as one of the greatest sprinters in Olympic history.
Continued Success
Since his Olympic triumph, Lavreysen has continued to rack up accolades. He has won six world championships in total, including three in the team sprint (2018, 2019, 2020), two in the individual sprint (2019, 2020), and one in the keirin (2020). His exceptional performances have earned him recognition as a cycling legend.
