Leading the Labor Movement
In 1934, Bridges spearheaded the West Coast longshoremen's strike, culminating in the formation of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union. His leadership extended beyond San Francisco, as he held the position of President of the Sailors' Union of the Pacific's Northern California District Council in 1935.

After World War II, Bridges served as President of the Maritime and Dockers Industry of the World Federation of Trade Unions. In 1946, he played a pivotal role in organizing a historic 80-day plantation workers' strike in Hawaii. However, Bridges' activism often came at a personal cost.
