José Díaz, a prominent Spanish trade unionist and political figure, served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) from 1932 to 1942.

Early Life and Activism

Born into a working-class family, Díaz worked as a baker. He initially became involved in the anarchist-syndicalist National Confederation of Labor (CNT) and actively participated in labor movements in Seville. His political activism led to several arrests.

Joining the Communist Party

In 1926, Díaz joined the PCE and rose to prominence as the head of the party's Andalusian organization. His dedication and leadership qualities earned him the position of General Secretary in 1932.

Leadership During the Spanish Civil War

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Díaz led the PCE while refraining from holding government positions. Despite his absence from official government roles, he played a pivotal role in guiding the party through the conflict.

Exile and Final Days

In 1938, Díaz was diagnosed with stomach cancer and traveled to the Soviet Union for treatment. After undergoing surgery in Leningrad, he worked at the headquarters of the Communist International in Moscow. With the outbreak of World War II, he was evacuated. In 1942, unable to bear the pain of his illness, he committed suicide in Tbilisi, Georgia, by jumping from a window.

Legacy

Despite his untimely demise, Díaz's legacy as a dedicated and influential communist leader lives on. He was laid to rest with great honor at the Vera Cemetery in Tbilisi, Georgia. His contributions to the labor movement and the PCE continue to be recognized and admired by Spanish communists and historians alike.
