Hailey Gardner: The Teenager with a Unique Limb Difference
Hailey Gardner is a 16-year-old high school student from Macksburg, Iowa, who was born with amniotic band syndrome, also known as Simonart's bands. This rare birth defect occurs when fibrous strands (amniotic bands) that normally do not impede fetal development become entangled around the limbs, legs, head, face, or internal organs.
The Creation of Fred the Hand
In Hailey's case, the amniotic bands cut off blood flow to her left arm, resulting in the absence of fingers. As a child, Hailey used a marker to draw eyes and a smile on her 'nubby hand,' which she affectionately named Fred. Her creative approach to embracing her difference inspired her friends, who suggested she start an Instagram account dedicated to her alter ego.
Fred's Adventures on Instagram
Fred has become an internet sensation, participating in various photoshoots that depict him engaging in everyday activities. He drives cars, travels on airplanes, plays Scrabble, and blows bubbles. Hailey's Instagram account, which has amassed over 150,000 followers, showcases Fred's adventures and aims to raise awareness about limb differences.
Hailey's Motivation and Inspiration
Hailey shares her story to empower others with limb differences and to educate the public about the condition. She hopes that by bringing attention to her experiences, people will become more comfortable interacting with individuals who have similar differences.
Facing Prejudice and Overcoming Obstacles
While most reactions to Fred have been positive, Hailey has encountered occasional negative comments. However, she has developed a strong sense of confidence with the support of her parents and followers. She shares, "I had a bully in school who was really, really mean... It mostly makes me nervous when I'm around a lot of little kids because they stare and then their parents get mad at them. If they came up and asked me about it, I would love to explain it... I hope my Instagram makes people laugh. But I also hope that when people see someone like me in public, they already know how to act. Hopefully, they won't stare or point."
Hailey's Future Goals
Hailey aspires to become a speech therapist and hopes to use her platform to advocate for individuals with limb differences. She believes that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and understanding, regardless of their physical appearance.
