Heather Mack, a young American woman, has been accused of murdering her mother and leaving her body in a suitcase with a taxi driver. The incident took place near the St Regis Bali Resort, where the suitcase was found covered in blood. Police suspect that a conflict between Heather and her mother may have led to the murder. There have been multiple documented family disputes between the victim and her daughter in the past.
The Discovery of the Body
The body of 62-year-old American woman, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, was discovered in the trunk of a taxi at the St Regis Bali Resort. Following the discovery, Heather Mack, the victim's 19-year-old daughter, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, were arrested on suspicion of murder. According to the police, after separating from the victim, the couple engaged in sexual activity in their 5-star hotel room. Heather claimed to have an ectopic pregnancy and urgently needed to fly to the United States for consultation, which led to her being taken to a local obstetrics and gynecology department to verify her claims.
The Investigation and Conflicting Stories
During the interrogation, Heather broke down in tears and stated that three unknown individuals had attempted to rob her and her mother shortly before Sheila's death. Indonesian police are currently conducting a psychiatric evaluation on both Heather and Tommy. Although they have not confessed, the Bali police have stated that they have ample evidence, including video footage, fingerprints, and the suitcase, proving their involvement in the crime. The couple could be charged under Article 340 of the Indonesian Penal Code, which carries the death penalty.
A History of Family Conflicts
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Sheila and Heather had numerous conflicts in their suburban Chicago residence in Oak Park. The police recorded a total of 86 distress calls between them from 2004 to June 2013. The victim and her husband, James, a classical music composer, were wealthy and educated individuals. According to friends and acquaintances, they doted on Heather, turning her into a "little monster." Heather's unpredictable behavior, including throwing tantrums and objects, was well-known among her friends. The fatal argument that allegedly led to Sheila's murder occurred just hours before the incident at the hotel.
The Involvement of Tommy Schaefer
Tommy Schaefer, Heather's boyfriend, was described by his university friend, Britani Strengman, as a "good guy." However, she mentioned that shortly before his arrest, he posted a peculiar message on Facebook, stating that he was going to Indonesia and then China, without specifying his return date.
The Tragic End
According to the autopsy report, Sheila von Wiese-Mack sustained fatal head injuries, likely caused by a shard of glass found in the hotel room. The suitcase containing her body, wrapped in a bedsheet and covered in blood, was discovered by a taxi driver. Heather and Tommy were captured on the hotel's surveillance cameras, dragging the suitcase (with the body) from the hotel room to the lobby using a secondary staircase.
