Biography of Hector Babenco

Hector Babenco was born in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He lived in Europe from 1964 to 1968, during which time he traveled extensively and worked in various jobs, including as a painter and cleaner. In 1969, he moved to Brazil and has lived in Sao Paulo ever since.

Early Career and Success

In 1975, Babenco directed his first film, "King of the Night," and his second film, "Lucio Flavio," based on real events, became one of the most successful Brazilian films. "Lucio Flavio" was watched by 5.4 million people.

Pixote: The Law of the Weakest

In 1981, Babenco directed the film "Pixote: The Law of the Weakest" about abandoned Brazilian children. The brilliant performance of Fernando Ramos, who was 10 years old during filming (his career was tragically cut short when he was killed by the police in 1987), takes place in the suburbs of Sao Paulo. The film achieved great international success and received numerous awards. It was named the Best Foreign Film by the Los Angeles and New York Critics Associations in 1981. In the late 80s, "Pixote" was named by the magazine "American Film" as one of the best films of the decade.
