Heide Simonis: Germany's First Female State Premier
Early Life and EducationHeide Simonis was born in Bonn, Germany. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education in economics and sociology at the universities of Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Kiel.
Teaching in Zambia
In the 1960s, Simonis relocated to Lusaka, Zambia, where she taught German as a foreign language.
Entry into Politics
Simonis's political journey began in 1969 when she joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). She was elected to the Bundestag (German parliament) in 1976 and rose through the ranks, becoming a member of the SPD parliamentary leadership and the chair of the Budget Committee.
State Premier of Schleswig-Holstein
In 1988, Simonis returned to her home state of Schleswig-Holstein as the Minister of Finance. She gained a reputation for her strict fiscal policies.
In 2005, at the age of 56, Simonis became Germany's first female state premier when she led the SPD to victory in the Schleswig-Holstein state elections. She held the position until 2008.
Marriage and Family
Heide Simonis has been married to Udo Simonis, an environmental scientist, since 1967. The couple's affectionate kiss following her election victory became a widely circulated image in the German press.
