Early Life and Family

Hendrik Delzen, born on January 13, 1895, in Nieuwer-Amstel near Amsterdam, was the third of eight sons born to Hendrik Delzen, a mason, and Johanna Maria Kok. In the late 19th century, the Delzen family relocated to Amsterdam, where Hendrik became a laborer.

Football Career

Ajax Amsterdam

In 1917, Delzen joined Ajax Amsterdam's reserve team and quickly rose through the ranks to the senior squad. His debut occurred on September 22, 1918, against Blauw-Wit, a match that Ajax won 3-0. During his debut season, Ajax emerged as league champions.

In his six seasons with Ajax, spanning 1918-1924, Delzen played 84 matches and scored 25 goals. He was a prolific striker known for his contributions to the team's successes.

National Team

Delzen made his international debut for the Netherlands on March 26, 1921, alongside his Ajax teammates André de Kruijff, Jan de Natris, and Wim Gupfert. The Netherlands emerged victorious, defeating Switzerland 2-0. Delzen's final international appearance occurred on March 26, 1922, against Belgium.

Other Interests and Later Years

Beyond football, Delzen was an avid track and field athlete, particularly in running. He was part of an Ajax relay team that included Frans Kaunton, Jan van Dort, and Jan de Natris.

In 1944, Delzen became the treasurer of the Royal Dutch Billiards Federation, a position he held until 1949. He also served as administrator for the Kras billiards club.

Personal Life and Legacy

Hendrik Delzen married Lena Elisabeth van de Linde in 1917. They had a daughter, also named Lena Elisabeth, who was born on January 17, 1919.

Delzen passed away in Amsterdam on November 13, 1954, at the age of 59. His funeral was attended by numerous family members, friends, and fellow athletes, including Ajax player Fons Pelser and representatives from the Kras billiards club and the Go Ahead Eagles football club.

Hendrik Delzen is remembered as a significant figure in Dutch football, a skilled striker who contributed to Ajax Amsterdam's early successes. His legacy extends beyond the pitch, encompassing his involvement in athletics and billiards, as well as his enduring impact on the sporting community.
