Early Life and Education
Born in Bremen in 1679, Samuel von Cocceji received his legal education at the University of Heidelberg. He earned his doctorate in law in 1698.
Academic Career
Cocceji began his academic career as a professor at the University of Heidelberg in 1672. In 1688, he moved to the University of Utrecht, where he taught until 1690. He then returned to Germany, becoming notary of the Faculty of Law at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder.
Imperial Baron and Royal Consultant
In 1712, Cocceji attained the prestigious title of imperial baron. He served as legal counsel to numerous German princes throughout his career.
Major Works
Cocceji's primary contribution to legal literature was his treatise "Juris publici prudentia" (1695), which became a standard reference for German public law. He also published several other influential works, including "Autonomia juris gentium" (1720), "Exercitationes curiosa" (1727), "Dissertationes varii argumenti" (1727), "Consilia et deductiones" (1725-1728), and "Grotius illustratus" (1744-1752).
