Early Life and Career

Hermann Drache was born in Germany and initially pursued apprenticeships in carpentry and shoemaking. He worked as a professional shoemaker until 1923, when he began studying woodcarving in Detmold and later attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden.

Training and Influences

From 1924 to 1927, Drache honed his skills in woodcarving, then continued his education at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden from 1927 to 1929. During this period, he also worked in the studio of renowned sculptor Georg Kolbe.

Travel and Study

In 1940, Drache received the "Roman Scholarship" from the Prussian Academy of Arts, which enabled him to travel to Florence for further study. He spent the following two years in Italy, immersing himself in the rich artistic environment.

War Service and Post-War Career

In 1942, Drache was drafted into the German army and served until the end of World War II in Berlin. After the war, he taught drawing and was instrumental in founding the Weissensee School of Art in Berlin. He held the position of professor and head of the sculpture department until his retirement in 1969.

Artistic Contributions

Drache's early works primarily focused on portraits, but from 1934 onward, he began creating nudes and animal sculptures. After 1945, he concentrated on large-scale sculptures, including a notable bust of Karl Marx.

Recognition and Legacy

Throughout his career, Drache received numerous honors and accolades. He became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1955 and served as secretary of the Fine Arts Section of the German Academy of Arts from 1958 to 1961. In 1975, he became a member of the executive committee of the sculpture department of the Artists' Union of the GDR.

International Travels

Drache's artistic pursuits extended beyond Germany. He embarked on trips to China, Vietnam, and the Georgian SSR during the 1950s and 1960s, broadening his artistic horizons and inspiring new perspectives.
