Karl Friedrich Ludwig Klüpfel was a German historian, Swiss-German literary scholar, sinologist, translator, and librarian. Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1808, he embarked on a distinguished academic career that left a lasting impact on the fields of German literature and sinology.

Early Life and Imprisonment

Klüpfel's early involvement in the oppositional Bavarian press landed him a two-year prison sentence in a fortress. During this time of incarceration, he found solace in translating the Chinese poem "Das Blumenblatt" in 1836, which was published in St. Gallen.

Academic Career

After his release, Klüpfel became a professor in St. Gallen and Arau. His magnum opus, "Geschichte der deutschen Literatur" (History of German Literature), stands as a monumental work encompassing three volumes first published in Leipzig in 1851. It went through multiple editions, demonstrating its enduring significance.

Literary Collections

Klüpfel also compiled two esteemed anthologies: "Handbuch der poet. Nationalliteratur" (Handbook of Poetic National Literature) and "Handbuch der deutschen Prosa" (Handbook of German Prose).
