Jan Baptist Albertrandi: A Polish Historian and Scholar
Early Life and EducationJan Baptist Albertrandi was born on December 7, 1731, in Warsaw, Poland, to an Italian father who had settled in the country. A cousin of the artist Antoni Albertrandi, Jan received a privileged education at a Jesuit school. By the age of 19, he was already a professor, initially at the Pultusk College and later in Plock, Nesvizh, and Vilnius.
Career in Poland
Albertrandi served as a librarian at the Załuski Library in Warsaw. Later, Primate Władysław Łubieński entrusted him with the education of his grandson, Felix, as well as the management of state affairs.
Following the Primate's death, Albertrandi and his student traveled to Siena, where he left the Jesuit order and became a secular priest. He visited Rome and returned to Warsaw with extensive collections. King Stanisław August appointed him as his private librarian and tasked him with filling in the gaps in his library regarding Polish history.
Research and Travel
From 1782 to 1785, Albertrandi traveled to Italian libraries to supplement his collection. Stanisław August arranged for his appointment as Bishop of Zenopole to facilitate his research. He later traveled to Stockholm and Uppsala for further acquisitions.
Late Career and Legacy
After the King's abdication, Albertrandi faced financial hardship. Nonetheless, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Society of Friends of Science in 1800 and was elected its chairman. Part of his manuscript collection was purchased by Tadeusz Czacki for the library of the Kremenets Lyceum in Volhynia. Albertrandi passed away on August 10, 1808.
