Heinrich Ratjen, previously known as Dora Ratjen, was a German athlete who gained notoriety for being involved in the first major gender scandal in the history of sports. Born in 1918 in Bremen, Germany, Ratjen grew up in a working-class family. From a young age, it was evident that Ratjen did not conform to traditional gender norms. Despite being raised as a girl, Ratjen never identified as one.
Athletic Career
