Heinrich von Treitschke: German Historian and Political Ideologue
Early Life and EducationHeinrich von Treitschke was born in Dresden on September 15, 1834, to an army officer. He received his education at the universities of Leipzig and Bonn. In 1859, he became a lecturer at the University of Leipzig.
Academic Career
In 1863, Treitschke was invited to teach at the University of Freiburg. During the war of 1866, he became a Prussian citizen and professor at the University of Kiel. He later taught at Heidelberg and in 1874 became professor of history at the University of Berlin.
Political Involvement
Treitschke was elected to the German Reichstag in 1871 as a member of the National Liberal Party. He was known as an opponent of liberalism, an advocate for the "Prussian spirit," and an admirer of Otto von Bismarck.
Literary Works
Treitschke's most famous work is "German History in the Nineteenth Century" (Deutsche Geschichte im neunzehnten Jahrhundert, 5 vols., 1879–1894). Other notable works include:

Editorial RolesIn 1866, Treitschke became editor of the "Prussian Yearbook" ("Preussisches Jahrbucher"). After the death of Heinrich von Sybel in 1895, he became editor of the "Historical Journal" ("Historische Zeitschrift").
Legacy
Treitschke died in Berlin on April 28, 1896. His writings and ideas influenced German politics and thought for decades to come, both during his lifetime and in the years that followed.
