Saint Henry of Uppsala, the Martyr
Early Life and Arrival in SwedenThe historical record surrounding Saint Henry's life is limited, as only medieval hagiographies provide accounts of his story. According to these sources, Henry hailed from England and arrived in Sweden alongside the future Pope Adrian IV. In Sweden, he was ordained as a bishop and appointed to the Diocese of Uppsala.
Mission to Finland
In the 1150s, Henry joined the Swedish Crusade led by King Eric IX to Christianize Finland. After the departure of the king and Swedish army, Henry remained in Finland, constructing churches and baptizing the population.
Martyrdom
On January 20, 1156 (the traditional date), Henry was assassinated by the pagan Lalli on the ice of Köyliönjärvi Lake. His cult spread rapidly throughout Sweden, and by the 13th century, he was recognized as a saint in ecclesiastical documents.
Patronage and Legacy
Saint Henry is widely revered as the patron saint of Finland. His feast day is celebrated on January 19 by both the Catholic Church and certain Protestant denominations. His memory remains a testament to the role he played in bringing Christianity to Northern Europe.
