Early Career

The esteemed Italian prelate served as Titular Bishop of Thala and Auxiliary Bishop of Oria from 1973 to 1975. Subsequently, he became Coadjutor Bishop of Oria with right of succession, a position he held from 1975 to 1978.

Episcopacy

On March 17, 1978, he was appointed Bishop of Oria, a role he fulfilled until April 4, 1981. He then rose through the ranks to become Archbishop of Foggia, Bovino, and Troia, serving from 1981 to 1987. In 1987, he was appointed Archbishop of Taranto, a position he held until 1990.

Archbishop of Palermo

In 1996, he became Archbishop of Palermo, a prestigious role he held for a decade until 2006. He briefly served as Apostolic Administrator of Palermo from December 2006 to February 2007.

Cardinalate

Recognizing his contributions to the Church, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of Cardinal-Priest on February 21, 1998. He was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli.
