Early Life and Acting CareerHelena Weigel was born in Austria in 1900 to an affluent family. She pursued acting training in Vienna, making her debut in 1919 with the Dramatic Theater in Frankfurt am Main. Her captivating performance in Arnolt Bronnen's "Patricide" impressed Bertolt Brecht, who would later become her husband.
Collaboration with Brecht
Weigel joined the Berlin State Theater in 1923 and the Deutsches Theater two years later. It was during this time that she met Brecht while working on his play "Drums in the Night." They had their son, Stefan, the following year and married in 1929 after Brecht's divorce.
In Berlin, Weigel played pivotal roles in Brecht's plays, including "Drums in the Night," "The Measures Taken," "Jungle of Cities," and "Man is Man." At the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, she portrayed Pelageya Vlasova in Brecht's adaptation of Gorky's "Mother."
Emigration and Exile
With the rise of Nazism, Weigel and Brecht fled Germany in 1933. They lived in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the United States. To facilitate Weigel's career abroad despite language barriers, Brecht created the mute role of Katrin in "Mother Courage and Her Children." However, the play faced rejection by European theaters.
Hollywood and Return to Germany
In the United States, Weigel played a mute role in the 1944 film "The Seventh Cross." After the war, she returned to Europe, performing in a Brecht-directed production of Sophocles' "Antigone" in 1948.
In 1949, Brecht and Weigel established the Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin. Weigel became the Intendant and led the theater until her death in 1971. The Berliner Ensemble gained international acclaim for its productions, particularly Weigel's portrayal of Mother Courage in the title role.
Political Activities and Accolades
Weigel became a member of the Socialist Unity Party in 1950 and ran for the Berlin City Council in 1954. She was awarded the National Prize of the GDR three times, and in 1960, she received the title of Professor of Arts. In 1965, she was honored with the Gold Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
