Heili Kaikkonen, Finnish Folk and Protest Singer
Early Life and MusicHeili Kaikkonen was born in Joensuu, Finland, in the province of North Karelia. She initially played the banjo before switching to the guitar. In 1966, she released her debut single featuring the East Karelian folk songs "Ajettih da tsignaiset" and "Ruskie neitüt, valgie neitüt." The recording was originally intended for the Fazer Finnlevy studio, but the label's head, Тойво Кярки, was skeptical about the success of Karelian folk songs. Consequently, the single was released by the Scandia label.
Success with Folk and Protest Songs
In the same year, Kaikkonen released a second single with two more East Karelian songs. Shortly after, she began recording proletarian songs, notably "Kuolemaantuomitun hyvästijätjö" and "Sotaorvon vala." She also collaborated on the albums "In Memorian" by Mauri Antero Numminen and "Voiko sen sanoa toisinkin" by Lasse Mårtenson.
Later Life
In the 1980s, Kaikkonen studied Arabic in Sudan and converted to Islam. Today, she teaches Arabic in Finland.
