Helmut Kremers: A German Football Legend
Helmut Kremers, a German footballer, made his mark as a defender throughout his illustrious career.
Club Career
For 13 seasons, Kremers graced the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Kickers Offenbach, and Schalke 04. With both Kickers and Schalke, he triumphed in the German Cup in 1970 and 1972, respectively. His career continued in the second-tier Bundesliga with Rot-Weiss Essen before he ventured to Canada's Calgary Boomers in the North American Soccer League.
Major Indoor Soccer League
After retiring from outdoor football in 1981, Kremers made a brief return to the pitch in the Major Indoor Soccer League with the Memphis Americans.
International Career
Kremers earned eight caps for West Germany, including three appearances alongside his twin brother, Erwin. Notably, he replaced his brother in the 1974 World Cup squad after Erwin was dismissed for disciplinary reasons. Despite being part of the triumphant team, Kremers did not feature in any of the tournament's matches.
Coaching and Management
In 1982/83, Kremers took on the role of player-coach for Oberliga club FC Kuppenheim. He later served as Schalke 04's caretaker manager for four days in April 1989 and held the position of general manager three times between 1989 and 1993. From 12 September to 6 December 1994, Kremers held the prestigious post of Schalke's president.
Later Life
In 2011, Kremers expressed interest in becoming president of MSV Duisburg but ultimately withdrew his candidacy.
