Hendrick Avercamp was a renowned Dutch painter who played a significant role in the establishment of the realistic style in Dutch art during the 17th century. He was born and educated in Amsterdam but spent most of his life in the small provincial town of Kampen.

Avercamp was one of the first artists to depict the native scenery in his paintings, particularly focusing on winter landscapes.
