Louis Gallet: Librettist and Painter
Born the son of sculptor Auguste Cain and brother of Georges Cain, Louis Gallet was a multifaceted artist who initially studied painting under Jean-Paul Laurens.
Artistic Contributions
While Gallet exhibited paintings and gained acclaim for works such as "The Triumph of Gold" at the Paris Salon in 1897, he gradually transitioned his focus towards dramatic arts. As a librettist, he wrote over 40 ballets and operas beginning in 1893.
Collaboration with Jules Massenet
Gallet's most notable collaborations were with composer Jules Massenet. He wrote the libretti for renowned operas such as "Sapho" (1897), "Cinderella" (1899), and "Don Quixote" (1910), as well as the ballet "The Swan" (1904).
Other Collaborations and Dramatic Works
Beyond Massenet, Gallet worked with composers Benjamin Godard, Charles Marie Widor, Henri Février, Umberto Giordano, and Franco Alfano, contributing to operas such as "Cyrano de Bergerac" based on Edmond Rostand's play. Additionally, Gallet wrote the play "A Christmas Night During the Terror" (1912) with Sarah Bernhardt's son Maurice.
