Early Life and Education
German-born British artist Lotte Cosman was raised in Düsseldorf, Germany. From 1937 to 1939, she studied in Switzerland before relocating permanently to the United Kingdom. Cosman enrolled at the Slade School of Art, where she studied under Randolph Schwabe and Bernard Meninsky.
Second World War and Early Career
During World War II (1943-1945), Cosman supplemented her income by delivering milk and teaching French and art at a Workers Educational Association school. In 1946, she began working as an illustrator.
Artistic Focus: Music and Portraits
Cosman specialized in capturing musicians and artists in motion. Her quick sketches depicted gestures and poses during performances and rehearsals. Her work introduced her to musicologist Hans Keller, whom she later married. Cosman's illustrations adorned two of Keller's books on Stravinsky: "Stravinsky at Rehearsal" (1962) and "Stravinsky Seen and Heard" (1982). She also produced a series of drawings of Benjamin Britten, Wilhelm Furtwängler, and portraits of her husband.
Legacy and Recognition
Cosman's works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Municipal Museum of Düsseldorf. Her artistic contributions have earned her recognition and admiration for her skilled depictions of movement and expression.
