Early Life and Education

Antoine Laurent de Jussieu was born on April 12, 1748, in Lyon, France. He received his medical degree from the University of Paris in 1770 and began teaching medical natural history at the university in 1863.

Academic Career

In addition to his professorship at the University of Paris, Jussieu also taught at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. He served as director of the Jardin des Plantes, the botanical garden in Paris.

Botanical Contributions

Jussieu was a renowned botanist and published numerous works on the subject. His major work, "Histoire des Plantes," was published in 1774 and established him as one of the leading botanists of his time. Jussieu's system of plant classification is still used today.

Honors and Affiliations

Jussieu was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1867. He was a member of the Botanical Society of France (1854), the Royal Society of London (1894), and a corresponding member and foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
