Early Career and Arrival at Chelsea

Henrique Hilário, a Portuguese goalkeeper, joined Chelsea F.C. on July 1, 2006, from Portuguese club Nacional. His acquisition was at the behest of then-Chelsea manager José Mourinho, who had previously worked with Hilário at Porto. Mourinho sought a reliable backup goalkeeper, and Hilário became Chelsea's third-choice keeper behind Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.

Premiering at Chelsea

On October 14, 2006, Hilário made his debut as a substitute against Reading FC due to injuries to Cech and Cudicini. His starting debut came on October 18, 2006, against Barcelona in a UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge.
