Early Life and Education

Henry Gardner, an American economist, was born on March 26, 1863, in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended University Grammar School and graduated from Brown University in 1884. Gardner earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1890.

Academic Career

While pursuing his doctorate, Gardner taught political economy at Brown University from 1888 to 1890. He became an assistant professor in 1890 and a full professor in 1898 after completing additional studies in Germany.

In 1919, Gardner was appointed the inaugural Eastman Professor of Political Economy. He served as President of the American Economic Association. He specialized in teaching courses on money, banking, and the public sector, while also continuing to teach introductory economics.

Contributions and Legacy

Gardner was a co-editor of the "Financial History of the United States," commissioned by the Carnegie Institution. He chaired the Department of Economics until his retirement in 1928.
