Henry Clinton: British General and Statesman

Early Life and Military Beginnings

Henry Clinton was born in New York City in 1730, the son of Admiral George Clinton. He began his military career in 1745 as a lieutenant in the New York militia. In 1746, he was promoted to captain and served in King George's War. To pursue further advancement, he traveled to England in 1749.

Career in the British Army

In 1751, Clinton became a captain in the Coldstream Guards. He distinguished himself in the Seven Years' War, rising to the rank of colonel in 1766. In 1772, he was promoted to major general and entered the British House of Commons.

Role in the American Revolution

In 1776, Clinton was sent to North America to quell the rebellion in the colonies. He played a key role in the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775) and subsequently became second-in-command to General William Howe. For his brilliant performance in the Battle of Long Island (August 27, 1776), he was promoted to lieutenant general and awarded the Order of the Bath.

Commander-in-Chief

After Howe's departure for Europe in 1778, Clinton was appointed commander-in-chief of British forces in America. In 1780, he and General Cornwallis captured Charleston, but Clinton later returned to New York, leaving Cornwallis isolated, which ultimately led to the British defeat at Yorktown in 1781.

Aftermath of the Revolution

Clinton was relieved of his command in 1782. To defend his actions in America, he published a "Narrative" in 1783, which provoked a scathing response from Cornwallis. He subsequently served as colonel of the 7th Dragoon Guards.

Later Years

In October 1793, Clinton was promoted to full general. In July 1794, he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar, but he died in London the following year before taking up the post.

Family

Clinton married Harriett Carter in 1767. They had five children: Frederick, William Henry, Henry, Augusta, and Harriett.
