Serikzhan Bilash: A Champion of Kazakh Human Rights
Kazakhstan's Serikzhan Bilash is a prominent public figure, political activist, and human rights defender. As the head of the rights group Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights and a renowned videoblogger, he has emerged as a vocal advocate for the Kazakh population in China.
Early Life and Political Awakening
Bilash was born in 1975 in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Growing up in a relatively affluent family, his childhood was marked by a skepticism towards Chinese propaganda that he learned from his father.
Following China's economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping, Bilash became an entrepreneur. In the early 2000s, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America. In 2008, he shifted his focus to human rights activism.
The Birth of Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights
In 2008, Bilash and his team began collecting written complaints from Kazakh citizens who were denied visas at the Chinese embassy in Urumchi. After facing pressure from Kazakh authorities to withdraw their complaints, they decided to record video testimonies instead. This incident marked the inception of Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights, which focuses exclusively on human rights issues affecting Kazakhs in China.
Suppression and Exile
In 2019, the Kazakhstani government raided the Atajurt office in Almaty and arrested Bilash on charges of inciting ethnic strife and damaging relations with China. After a failed attempt to prosecute him, Bilash fled to Turkey and then the United States in December 2020.
Despite threats against his safety within Kazakhstan, Atajurt reopened its office in Almaty in February 2022. However, Bilash and some members remain abroad to avoid political persecution.
Continued Advocacy
Today, Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights continues to document human rights abuses in Kazakhstan and advocate for victims of the January 2022 violence. The organization shares its findings with Western governments and human rights organizations, further amplifying Bilash's calls for justice.
