Henry Lucero: Cancer Survivor and Triumphant Dreamer

Awakening to the Shadow of Cancer

Henry Lucero's unwavering belief in his longevity was shattered at the age of 55 when a relentless battle with kidney cancer began. A family history of exceptional lifespans, including a grandfather who lived to 115, had fueled his optimism. However, fate had a different plan.

Recognizing the Signs

During a routine task in his backyard, an unexpected twist of events led to a diagnosis that would change Henry's life forever. While lifting a heavy stone, the sudden bark of a dog startled him, causing him to drop the load and pull a muscle in his side. Over-the-counter pain relievers failed to alleviate the discomfort, prompting him to seek medical attention.

Unraveling the Mystery

The doctor's examination revealed a persistent cough that had plagued Henry for months. A chest X-ray exposed a peculiar circular mass the size of a golf ball in his lung. Further scans confirmed the grim reality: a tumor demanding additional investigation. An oncologist became Henry's next destination.

A Distant Horizon: Cancer Treatment Centers of America

Henry's wife, Nancy, had heard about Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) from an advertisement but could not recall the name. Through their daughter's online research, they stumbled upon CTCA's website and made contact.

A Personalized Approach

The CTCA team immediately requested Henry's medical records, which were swiftly delivered by courier. A personal consultation in Illinois was scheduled, demonstrating the extraordinary care CTCA extended to its patients. Assistance with airfare, accommodation, and transportation helped alleviate the logistical burdens of their journey.

Rapid Assessment and Intervention

With remarkable efficiency, Henry underwent a battery of tests within days. The results were sobering: his cancer had progressed to Stage 4, affecting multiple areas of his body. A baseball-sized mass had formed in his kidney, while his lungs, liver, and lymph nodes were also compromised.

A Journey of Healing

Radical nephrectomy, a surgical procedure involving removal of his kidney, surrounding lymph nodes, and adrenal gland, was the recommended treatment for his kidney cancer. The surgery spanned 2.5 hours, followed by several days of attentive post-operative care. Henry spent a month recovering at home before returning to CTCA for an aggressive immunotherapy regimen.

Unwavering Support

The immunotherapy, consisting of interferon and interleukin, was administered over two phases. Each phase spanned approximately eight weeks and brought its share of unpleasant side effects, including persistent nausea. However, the medical team's dedication and compassion mitigated Henry's discomfort.

Homeward Bound Recovery

The second phase of treatment continued at home for eight months, with injections administered three times a week. The potent medications left Henry feeling perpetually groggy. Nevertheless, they proved effective in eradicating the cancer in his lymph nodes, lungs, and liver.

A Life Transformed

Henry's return to work a year after his final treatment marked a profound turning point. His battle with cancer had not only tested his physical limits but had also awakened him to unforeseen inner strengths. He credits his faith, along with his wife's unwavering support, as instrumental in his triumph over adversity.

Embracing the Present

Victory over cancer has imbued Henry with a heightened appreciation for life. Each wedding anniversary, every new day, and news of his children's milestones now resonate as precious gifts he nearly lost—and ultimately reclaimed.

Celebrating Milestones and Reaching New Heights

In June 2010, Henry commemorated his five-year anniversary as a cancer survivor. In January 2011, he celebrated his 60th birthday. His unwavering determination to live a full and rich life may yet see him achieve his original goal: reaching the remarkable age of 120.
