Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave
Henry Phipps was a British politician and soldier who held high government offices during the reign of George III. He was a Knight of the Order of the Bath and a member of the Privy Council.
Early Life and Career
Born into an aristocratic family, Phipps began his career in the military, serving as an aide-de-camp to various generals. In 1784, he was elected to the House of Commons, representing Scarborough.
Lord Mulgrave
In 1792, Phipps inherited the title Baron Mulgrave of the Irish peerage, becoming known as Lord Mulgrave. He held several government positions, including Secretary at War (1793-1804) and Master-General of the Ordnance (1804-1807).
Foreign Secretary
Mulgrave's most notable role was as Foreign Secretary in William Pitt the Younger's cabinet from 1805 to 1806. During this time, he handled negotiations with France and other European powers during the Napoleonic Wars.
Later Career
After leaving the Foreign Office, Mulgrave served as First Lord of the Admiralty (1807-1810) and Master-General of the Ordnance (1810-1819). In 1812, he was created Viscount Normanby and Earl of Mulgrave.
Legacy
Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, was a prominent figure in British politics and military affairs during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His legacy lives on through his descendant, Eric Phipps, who was a notable diplomat and ambassador in the 20th century.
