Biography of Tom Price

Tom Price, an American physician and politician, served as the 23rd United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. He was also the Chairman of the House Budget Committee and a member of the United States House of Representatives from Georgia's 6th congressional district from January 3, 2005.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Edmunds "Tom" Price was born on October 8, 1954, in Lansing, Michigan, and grew up in Dearborn. He completed his medical training at the University of Michigan Health System and pursued his postgraduate education at Emory University in Atlanta. Price eventually settled in Roswell, a suburb of Atlanta, where he currently resides. He was also the former president of the Rotary Club in Roswell.

Medical Career

Prior to his political career, Price spent 20 years leading an orthopedic clinic in Atlanta and later returned to Emory University as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He also served as the head of the orthopedic clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital, the largest hospital in Georgia. Price is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

Political Career

In 1996, Price entered the race for the United States House of Representatives as a Republican candidate after a senator decided not to seek re-election. He won the November general election with 71% of the vote. Price was re-elected for three more terms, winning in 1998, 2000, and 2002. In 2004, he ran unopposed after Congressman Johnny Isakson decided not to seek re-election. Price easily won the Republican primary in Fulton County and went on to win the general election. He continued to be re-elected in subsequent years, winning with large margins.

Price is known for his conservative stances on various issues. He has been a vocal opponent of abortion and has supported legislation to restrict funding for abortions. He has also opposed gun control measures and has received high ratings from the National Rifle Association. In January 2017, it was reported that Price had purchased shares in Zimmer Biomet, a medical equipment company, shortly before introducing legislation that could delay regulations affecting Medicare and Medicaid programs. Critics raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as Zimmer Biomet could be affected by the proposed regulations. Price defended his actions, stating that they were conducted honestly, transparently, ethically, and within the bounds of the law.
