Henry Martin Robert was a renowned engineer and author of the widely-used parliamentary procedure manual, Robert's Rules of Order. He was born on May 2, 1837, in Southern California, United States.

Early Life and Education

Henry grew up in Ohio, where his family had relocated for political reasons. His father became the first president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Henry received an excellent education and successfully completed higher education.

Career in Engineering

After graduating, Henry Martin Robert became a military engineer and was in high demand. He constructed fortifications on San Juan Island during the Pig War in 1859. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), he worked on the construction of defensive structures in Washington, Philadelphia, and several ports in New England. From 1867 to 1871, he served in the Army's Division of the Pacific as a military engineer. He spent several more years working in different regions of the country.

Roles and Accomplishments

From 1895 to 1901, Henry served as the president of the Board of Engineers, and later was appointed as the Chief Engineer. He continued his engineering work until his retirement on May 2, 1901. Even after leaving the military, Henry remained active in his profession. For some time, he led a team of engineers involved in the design of the Galveston Dam.

Robert's Rules of Order

In 1876, Henry Robert gained particular fame with the publication of his famous rules on parliamentary procedure, known as the Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies. These rules were concise, optimal, and highly enduring. Even today, Robert's Rules of Order remains a significant reference in parliamentary procedures.

Later Life and Legacy

Henry Martin Robert passed away on May 11, 1923, in New York and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His contributions as an engineer and author continue to have a lasting impact on parliamentary procedures in the United States.
