Heraclonas was the younger son of Byzantine Emperor Heraclius.Early Life and Family
Born after the death of his mother in 612, Heraclonas's father remarried his niece, Martina. This controversial marriage violated state and church laws, sparking resentment among the populace. Martina's desire for Heraclonas to succeed his half-brother, Constantine, fueled dissatisfaction with the imperial family.
Joint Rule and Division
In 638, under his father's insistence, Constantine agreed to share power with his half-brother. Heraclonas's accession was met with resistance due to his mother's influence and the perceived incestuous nature of his parents' marriage.
Succession and Death
Following Heraclius's death in February 641, Martina was forced to flee, leaving Constantine as the sole ruler. However, his deteriorating health led to his demise on May 25, 641. His death was attributed to Martina's machinations.
Aftermath and Legacy
Martina's actions triggered a coup that transferred power to Constantine's underage children (see Constans II). Heraclonas's brief reign was marked by political instability and the widening rift between the imperial family and the Byzantine people.
