German Philologist Hermann Köchly
Hermann Köchly was a German philologist known for his contributions to classical literature and linguistics.
Political Exile and Professorship
In 1849, Köchly was forced to leave his homeland due to political reasons. He subsequently became a professor of classical literature at the University of Zurich and Heidelberg University.
Return to Saxony and Political Activism
Upon returning to Saxony in 1871, Köchly was elected as a member of the Parliament, where he joined the Progressive Party.
Scholarly Publications and Editorial Work
Köchly edited several scholarly editions of classical authors, including Hesiod and Nonnus. He also authored several dissertations, such as "De Iliadis carminibus" and "De Odysseae carminibus."
Additionally, he published a collection titled "Griechische Kriegsschriftsteller" with German translations (1853-1855), and an introduction to Caesar's commentaries on the Gallic War (1857).
Biographical Work
Köchly wrote a biography of his teacher, the renowned philologist Gottfried Hermann, and contributed to other scholarly publications throughout his career.
