Kudaibergen Zhumabayev: A Scholar, Linguist, and Educator
Early Life and EducationKudaibergen Zhumabayev was born in the village of Akzhar, Atyrau Region, Kazakhstan, on December 19, 1899. He received his early education from his father, Kuwan Zhumabayev, and later studied at the "Husaynia" madrasah in Orenburg. In 1928, he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Living Eastern Languages. Zhumabayev was a renowned scholar and linguist who made significant contributions to the field of Kazakh language studies. He played a crucial role in the development of the Kazakh alphabet and orthography based on the Latin script. He also authored several groundbreaking works on Kazakh grammar, including "Compound Words in the Kazakh Language" and "Phonetics."
Founder of Kazakh Linguistics
Leader in Education and AdministrationZhumabayev was not only a scholar but also a dedicated educator and administrator. He served as a professor and head of the Kazakh Language and Literature Department at the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute. He also held various positions in the Kazakh People's Commissariat of Education, including Chairman of the State Terminology Commission and Chairman of the Educational and Methodological Council.
Political Involvement and Later Life
Zhumabayev was actively involved in political and social affairs. He was a member of the Kazakh Central Executive Committee and a delegate to the 16th All-Russian Congress of Soviets. However, in 1937, he was unjustly arrested, accused of being an enemy of the people, and executed on February 25, 1938.
Legacy and Honors
Zhumabayev's untimely demise was a great loss to the Kazakh people. His groundbreaking work in linguistics remains a cornerstone of Kazakh language studies. His name has been bestowed upon the Aktobe State University, a leading institution in western Kazakhstan. A monument was erected to honor him at the university, and streets in many cities bear his name.
