Herman von Wartberge
Herman von Wartberge was a member of the Teutonic Order and the author of the "Livonian Chronicle."
Early Life and Origins
According to Ernst Strehlke, who translated Herman's work from Latin to German, he was a Livonian priest before joining the Teutonic Order. Herman's origins likely traced back to Westphalia, as citizens from that region were actively involved in the expansion of the Order's territories in the east.
Service in Livonia
From 1358 onwards, Herman's chronicle provides much more detailed information, suggesting that this year marked the beginning of his service in Livonia. In 1366, he appeared in Danzig as a delegate of the Teutonic Order in negotiations with the Livonian bishops. This may indicate that he was already somewhat advanced in age by that time.
Military and Diplomatic Campaigns
Herman participated in numerous campaigns against pagan tribes on the Order's conquered lands. He is also mentioned in connection with the treaty concluded between the Teutonic Order, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and the people of Polotsk. It is likely that this refers to Herman von Wartberge.
