Biography of Luis Orbegoso

Luis Jose Orbegoso, the Count of Olmos, was a Peruvian aristocrat, statesman, and military leader. He served as the temporary president of Peru from December 21, 1833, to August 11, 1836. His presidency took place during a time of political instability and civil war as Peru was establishing its statehood. Orbegoso was removed from office twice during his term.

Involvement in Wars

Luis Jose Orbegoso participated in the war for Peru's independence under the command of Jose de San Martin, as well as in the war against Gran Colombia under the command of Jose de La Mar. In the 1833 elections, Orbegoso emerged victorious over Pedro Bermudez, a supporter of the previous president.

Political Turmoil

However, Pedro Bermudez declared himself president due to subsequent conflicts. He was soon ousted by the troops of Felipe Salaverry, who himself was later removed from power by President Luis Jose Orbegoso. With the help of Bolivian President Andres de Santa Cruz's troops, Orbegoso regained power.

Peru-Bolivian Confederation

As a repayment for Santa Cruz's assistance, Luis Orbegoso agreed to the creation of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, where Santa Cruz became the head of the confederation while Orbegoso only governed the Republic of Northern Peru.

Challenges and Exile

Following his defeat by Augustin Gamarra, who had the support of Chile and sought to regain power, Orbegoso was forced to leave Peru. After several years, he returned but avoided involvement in political life. Luis Orbegoso passed away in the city of Trujillo in 1847.
