Hyoma Abe: Rising Star of Japanese Judo
Hyoma Abe, a fourth-degree black belt judoka from Japan, has made a name for himself on the international stage. As a two-time world champion and an Olympic gold medalist, Abe has showcased his exceptional skills in the sport.
Early Beginnings and Youth Success
Born into a family with a rich judo legacy, Abe began his judo journey at the age of six, inspired by televised matches. He quickly rose through the ranks, winning three silver medals at the World Junior Championships, including the Under-18 category in 2014 and the Under-21 category in 2014.
International Breakthrough and Domestic Success
Abe's first major international triumph came at the prestigious Jigoro Kano Cup in 2014, defeating London Olympics bronze medalist Masashi Ebinuma. He repeated his success against Ebinuma in the semi-finals of the 2016 All-Japan Championships, ultimately claiming the title.
Olympic Champion and Continued Dominance
Despite his impressive victory, Ebinuma was chosen to represent Japan at the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, Abe went on to dominate the new Grand Slam tournament in Tyumen and won the Jigoro Kano Cup later that year. In 2017, he became the youngest-ever winner of the Paris tournament.
Abe's dominance continued at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, where he emerged victorious in the under-66kg category. He secured a second world title in the same weight class at the 2018 World Championships in Baku.
Tokyo Olympics and Legacy
In 2021, Abe fulfilled his Olympic dream by winning the gold medal in Tokyo, following in the footsteps of his sister Uta, who won the women's under-52kg event. Hyoma Abe's accomplishments have cemented his place among the elite judokas of his generation and set the stage for continued success in the years to come.
