Early Life and Career
After graduating from Osaka Municipal College of Design, Hiroko Utsumi embarked on her journey in the anime industry. She initially gained prominence for her work at Kyoto Animation, where she directed the popular anime series "Free!".

Following her departure from Kyoto Animation, Hiroko Utsumi directed the anime series "Banana Fish", based on the manga of the same name by Akimi Yoshida. The 24-episode series marked the 40th anniversary of Yoshida's debut as a mangaka and featured an adaptation that transported the story from the 1980s to the 2010s, incorporating modern-day elements such as smartphones and the Iraq War.
