Early Life and Education

Niels Oluf Krarup Gilbert-Jespersen was born on May 27, 1896, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He began playing the flute at a young age.

Musical Training in Denmark and France

Gilbert-Jespersen studied at the Royal Danish Conservatory under Frederik Storm. He further honed his skills in Paris under Adolphe Hennebains and Philippe Gaubert, adopting the French style of playing.

Career in Denmark

Upon his return to Denmark, Gilbert-Jespersen joined the Danish Royal Kapelle (1927-1956) and its Woodwind Quintet. He also participated in the Danish Quartet (1935-1957).

Collaboration with Carl Nielsen

Gilbert-Jespersen played a prominent role in the premiere of Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet, Op. 43, in 1922. This inspired Nielsen to create concertos for each member of the quintet. The Flute Concerto, written specifically for Gilbert-Jespersen, was completed in 1926 and premiered under the composer's direction on October 21, 1926.

Recordings and Performance

In 1954, Gilbert-Jespersen made the first recording of Nielsen's Flute Concerto with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Jensen. He also participated in the recording of several other ensemble works by Nielsen.

Teaching and Legacy

From 1927, Gilbert-Jespersen taught at the Royal Danish Conservatory. He received numerous Danish musical awards and is considered one of the most influential Danish flutists of the twentieth century.
