Horst Paulmann, a German-Chilean businessman, has made an indelible mark on the retail landscape of South America. As CEO and Chairman of Cencosud, one of the region's largest retailers, he has built a vast empire encompassing supermarkets, hypermarkets, shopping malls, and financial institutions.
Early Life and Roots in Chile
Born in Kassel, Germany, in 1936, Paulmann found himself in Chile as a teenager in the post-World War II era. His family, which had seven children, initially settled in Buenos Aires before relocating to Osorno in southern Chile. There, Paulmann attended a German school but soon left to assist his father in their business endeavors.
The Rise of Cencosud
In 1952, the Paulmanns purchased a holiday home in Temuco. Upon his father's passing, Horst and his siblings transformed the property into a supermarket. Their venture flourished, and the operation soon expanded into a chain of successful stores.
In 1976, after a trip to Europe, Paulmann introduced a novel concept to Chile: the hypermarket. His first Jumbo hypermarket revolutionized the retail industry, and today, Cencosud operates a network of 43 hypermarkets across Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.
Diverse Holdings and Financial Success
Cencosud's empire extends beyond supermarkets and hypermarkets. The company owns over 600 supermarkets, 29 shopping malls, and hundreds of specialty retail stores. It also controls financial institutions, family entertainment centers, travel agencies, and real estate ventures.
Paulmann served as a director of Banco Paris and Cencosud-owned Costanera Center, which developed South America's tallest skyscraper, a shopping mall with 250 stores that attracted 7 million visitors in its first three months.
Wealth and Recognition
As of March 2013, Paulmann and his family's collective wealth, largely derived from their 61% stake in Cencosud, was estimated at $9.7 billion. This makes him the second wealthiest individual in Chile and 114th on Forbes' billionaire list.
Paulmann has received numerous accolades for his business achievements, including the Chilean Diego Portales Award for Outstanding Businessman, the ICARE Award for Businessman of the Year, and the Fortuna Award for Retail Businessman of the Year. He was also honored by Argentina with the Orden de Mayo en su Grado de Comendador in recognition of his contributions to the country's economy.
