Biography of Howard Stringer
Howard Stringer is an American businessman of Welsh descent, and the former Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation. He was born on February 19, 1942, in Cardiff, Wales to Harry Stringer and his wife Mary Marjorie Pook. Stringer immigrated to the United States in 1965 and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He obtained American citizenship in 1985, becoming a dual citizen of both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Stringer attended Oundle School in Nottinghamshire and obtained a Master of Arts degree in Modern History from the University of Oxford. His younger brother, Rob Stringer, currently leads the group of labels at Sony Music.
In 1978, Howard Stringer married Jennifer A. Kinmond Patterson, a dermatologist, with whom he has two children.
Career
Before joining Sony, Stringer had a successful 30-year career as a journalist, producer, and executive at CBS Inc., an American television and radio network. From 1988 to 1995, he served as the President of CBS, overseeing the company's radio and television stations as well as all of its broadcasts, including entertainment, news, and sports programs. Under his leadership, CBS became the first network to rise from last place to the top of the ratings within one season.
From 1986 to 1988, Stringer was the President of CBS News, where he developed several new programs, including the award-winning "48 Hours," which continues to air in prime time. Prior to that, as the Executive Producer of CBS Evening News alongside Dan Rather from 1981 to 1984, Stringer helped make the program the most popular evening news broadcast at the time.
From 1976 to 1981, Stringer served as the Executive Producer of the documentary division, CBS Reports, earning numerous awards, including 31 Emmy Awards, four George Foster Peabody Awards, three Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, three Christopher Awards, three Overseas Press Club Awards, and others. Additionally, Stringer received nine personal Emmy Awards as a writer, director, and producer from 1973 to 1983.
In November 1999, Stringer was inducted into the Welsh Hall of Fame by the Royal Television Society.
Role at Sony
Stringer was appointed as the Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation of America when the company was facing losses and increased competition from Samsung, Sharp, Apple Inc., and Panasonic. Leveraging his extensive experience in the media industry, Stringer was responsible for revitalizing Sony's media business in the United States, including the successful release of popular films such as the Spider-Man franchise and more. He became the President of Sony Corporation in 2009 and also served on the board of directors for Sony Corporation, Sony Music Entertainment, and other Sony music holdings in the United States. In addition, he served as the Chairman of the board of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, an international telecommunications company.
