Biography of Juan Gris
Juan Gris was a Spanish artist and a representative of Cubism. He was born on March 23, 1887, in Madrid, with the real name of José Victoriano González. In the beginning, he earned a living by drawing for humor publications while studying painting at the same time.
Parisian Period
In 1906, Gris moved to Paris and settled in Montmartre, not far from his fellow countryman, Pablo Picasso. During the formative years of his career, from 1906 to 1912, Gris became fascinated with Cubism. His early works from 1911 to 1912 were executed in an "analytical" manner, influenced by both Cézanne and Picasso and Braque.
Development of Cubism
Rapidly evolving, Gris developed his own version of "synthetic" Cubism by 1913-1914. He described his painting as a "variant of flat, colorful architecture," a premonition of the harmonious arrangement of forms and colors. He believed that the essence of painting lay in the expressive interaction between the artist and the external world, referring to paintings lacking representational elements as "defective technical exercises." Gris' version of Cubism was stricter and more classical, less spontaneous than that of Braque or Picasso.
Refined Style
In his paintings from 1920 to 1927, Gris cultivated the "refined and aestheticized side of painting, which had not found a place in his earlier work." As a result, his style acquired extraordinary freedom, lyricism, and at the same time, boldness and completeness.
Legacy
Juan Gris passed away in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, on May 11, 1927. His contributions to Cubism and his unique approach to art continue to be celebrated and studied by art enthusiasts and scholars around the world.
