Early Life and Family

Hubert van Doorne was born on April 13, 1898, in America, a town in Dutch Limburg. His father, Martin van Doorne, was a blacksmith. In 1912, the family moved to Deurne, North Brabant, where Martin van Doorne passed away shortly after. Despite Hubert's aspirations to follow in his father's footsteps, he was dismissed due to his young age. He was eventually sent to Eindhoven to study blacksmithing.

From Apprentice to Entrepreneur

After World War I, van Doorne worked as a driver and mechanic for a local doctor before joining the brewery 'De Valk'. In 1920, he established his own business, which initially focused on repairing and manufacturing various metal objects, from bicycles and automobiles to stoves. However, the business proved unstable, and van Doorne returned to 'Mandigers' as a manager in 1924.

The Path to Industrial Success

In April 1928, with support from 'De Valk' brewery, van Doorne returned to metalworking. Initially, he repaired and manufactured a wide range of items, from ladders and cabinets to window frames. Later, he shifted focus to repairing trailers, which led to the establishment of 'Doorne's Aanhangwagenfabriek' in 1929. The company, with four employees including van Doorne and his brother Wim, grew rapidly, reaching 30 employees within a year.

Van Doorne expanded into truck production in 1932. The outbreak of World War II forced him to add military vehicles to his product line. The transition to heavier vehicles prompted a name change to 'Van Doorne's Automobielfabriek'.

Engineering Genius and Technical Advancements

The company continued to grow and prosper. While Hubert focused on engineering, Wim managed business and financial affairs. One of Hubert's most significant contributions was the development of a continuously variable transmission, which brought the company great success in the 1950s and 1960s.

Personal Life and Later Years

Van Doorne and his family resided in Eindhoven for some time before returning to Deurne. They lived there until Hubert's passing in 1979. His legacy as a pioneer in the automotive industry continues to inspire aspiring engineers and entrepreneurs.
