Early Career

Born in Northern Ireland, Martin Donnelly began his racing career in 1985 in British Formula Ford. From 1986 to 1988, he competed in British Formula 3, amassing five victories over three seasons.

Formula 3000 and Formula One Debut

In 1988, Donnelly entered the Formula 3000 championship. He secured two race wins in 1989, which earned him a brief stint in Formula One that same year. He made his debut at the French Grand Prix for Arrows, but failed to finish the race.

Joining Lotus and the Devastating Crash

The following year, Donnelly joined the Lotus team in Formula One. However, his season was marred by a gruesome accident during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. His car crashed into a barrier at high speed, splitting in half and obliterating the cockpit.

Injury and Recovery

Donnelly was ejected from the car, still strapped to his seat, and suffered severe injuries. Miraculously, he survived and underwent an extensive recovery process. Despite regaining his health, he retired from professional motor racing and made only sporadic appearances in historic car events.
