Early Life and Ancestry

Count of Vermandois and Valois

Hugues de France was the son of King Henry I of France and Anne of Kiev, daughter of Grand Prince Yaroslav I the Wise of Kievan Rus. His royal lineage bestowed upon him the titles of Count of Vermandois and Valois.

First Crusade

Shipwreck and Imperial Oath

As one of the leaders of the First Crusade, Hugues embarked on a perilous voyage from Bari, Italy, to Greece. However, his ship met with disaster, and he was shipwrecked near Durrës. Rescued and escorted to Constantinople, he reluctantly swore fealty to Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.

Battle Prowess

Despite his forced allegiance, Hugues demonstrated remarkable valor in the Battle of Dorylaeum. However, he returned to France from Antioch in 1098 before the capture of Jerusalem.

Return to the Crusade and Death

Unfulfilled Promise

In 1101, Hugues once again joined the Crusade, driven by his desire to fulfill his vow. However, the crusade suffered a crushing defeat in Cappadocia, during which he sustained severe wounds. Hugues eventually succumbed to his injuries on October 18, 1102.

Family and Legacy

Marriage and Children

Hugues married Adelais de Vermandois, daughter of Herbert IV, Count of Vermandois and Valois. Together, they had nine children, including Raoul I the Brave, who inherited his father's titles.

Numerous Offspring and Alliances

Hugues's daughters and sons established alliances with influential families throughout France and England. His daughters married into the houses of Boves, Gornay, Beaumont, and Warenne. His son, Henry, became Lord of Chaumont and Vexin, while Simon became Bishop of Noyon.
