Early Life and Career
Harald-August Tõnisson Laur was born on 7 March 1893, in the village of Väike-Maarja, Estonia. He worked as a stonemason's apprentice and draughtsman in Riga. In 1918, he embarked on his artistic career as an actor at the "Estonia" theater in Tallinn.
Film Debut and Recognition
Laur made his film debut in 1930 with "Waves of Passion," a joint Estonian-German production. He went on to star in several notable films, including "Life in the Citadel" (1947), "Light in Koordi" (1951), and "The Shore of Winds" (1970).
Teaching and Political Involvement
Laur also taught at the Department of Drama at the Estonian Theater Institute. In 1950, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
Awards and Honors
Laur received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Estonian SSR in 1947. He also won two Stalin Prizes, in 1948 and 1952.
