Life of Hugh IV, Count of Burgundy

Early Life and Marriage

Hugh IV was a nobleman born to Jean I, Count of Chalon, and Margaret, daughter of Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy. In 1236, his father arranged his marriage to Alice of Merania, daughter of Count Otto II of Merania.

Count of Burgundy

In 1248, upon the death of Count Otto III of Burgundy, Alice inherited the county. Hugh's reign as Count of Burgundy was marked by conflicts with his father, who sought to rule on behalf of his daughter-in-law.

Rebellion and Intervention

In 1258, an uprising erupted in Besançon against Archbishop Guillaume. Hugh and his father supported the rebels, leading to the expansion of the conflict throughout Burgundy. Pope Alexander IV condemned the uprising in 1259, prompting the intervention of King Louis IX of France and Duke Hugh IV of Burgundy. The rebellion was quelled in 1260.

Legacy and Succession

Hugh IV died in late 1266, predeceasing his father. Jean I became regent of Burgundy for Hugh's young son Otto IV. However, Jean I also died shortly thereafter. Alice of Merania governed Burgundy until 1279, when she remarried Philip of Savoy. Otto IV inherited the county in 1279.
