Biography of Ian Blair
Ian Blair, the new head of Scotland Yard, is one of the most unusual chiefs of police in the United Kingdom. He began his education at Harvard University in the United States and Oxford University in Britain, where he obtained a doctoral degree in English language and literature. However, in 1974, he joined the ranks of the Metropolitan Police as he was unable to find a way to apply his philological and literary knowledge.
Rise through the Ranks
Since joining the police force, Ian Blair steadily climbed the career ladder. In 1985, he became the Chief Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department in the Kentish Town district of London. In 1998, he was appointed as the Chief Constable of Surrey, and in 2000, he became the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, the highest rank in British policing.
