Biography of Jan Carey
Jan Carey is an American musician, DJ, music producer, and singer-songwriter. He was born in Binghamton, New York, and grew up in a musical family. His mother, Judy Carey, was an illustrator, while his father, Philip, was a designer of museum exhibitions and a member of the Grammy-winning choir, the Gregg Smith Singers.

Early Life and Musical Influences
Growing up, Jan was exposed to a wide range of music, primarily classical and jazz. His father's passion for classical music and his collaborations with renowned jazz musicians like Dave Brubeck and the Modern Jazz Quartet influenced Jan's musical taste. However, it wasn't until he started learning to play the trumpet that he truly began to appreciate and explore jazz music.

In his teenage years, Jan moved to Folsom, California, where he switched from the trumpet to the French horn. However, a fateful encounter with a trumpet in high school led to Jan's inclusion in the jazz band and sparked his love for playing the instrument. He quickly excelled and started playing solos, realizing his talent and passion for jazz music.

Musical Education and Career
After completing his studies in classical trumpet at the University of Nevada in Reno, Jan attended the New School in New York City to further pursue his musical education. During this time, he also played on the streets with fellow students to earn money. However, after five years in New York City, Jan felt limited by his evening job as a proofreader and decided to move to San Francisco.

In San Francisco, Jan immersed himself in the local jazz scene and began playing with various bands and ensembles, including the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, the 8 Legged Monster, and the Realistic Orchestra. However, his main focus has always been on performing his own compositions as a member of his quintet.
Jan gained recognition as a jazz artist in 2006 with the release of his debut CD, "SINK/SWIM," which received airplay on KCSM-FM, a prominent California radio station. Since then, he has continued to write and perform his melodic compositions, delighting audiences with his unique style and originality.
Personal Philosophy and Musical Style
Jan believes in creating a distinctive musical context for his work to stand out among the many talented musicians in the world. He expresses his individuality through writing his own music and crafting his melodies. While Jan appreciates and learns from the great jazz masters, he believes that trying to equal them is an impossible task. Instead, he strives to define his own voice and pursue his artistic vision.
Jan's dedication to his craft and his commitment to creating original and meaningful music have earned him a devoted following and critical acclaim. As he continues to evolve as a musician, Jan Carey remains a dynamic force in the contemporary jazz scene, captivating audiences with his soulful performances and innovative compositions.
