Antônio Carlos Gomes Grosso
Early Life and EducationAntônio Carlos Gomes Grosso was a Brazilian cellist born into a family with deep musical roots. He was the grandnephew of Carlos Gomes, one of the most prominent Brazilian composers of the 19th century. Grosso pursued his musical education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1924, alongside fellow students Oscar Borgert and Mariuccia Iacovino, he performed in the inaugural concert of the newly formed student orchestra.
Training with Pablo Casals
Grosso's talent and dedication led him to seek further training under the legendary cellist Pablo Casals. Casals's guidance greatly refined Grosso's technique and musicality.
Collaboration and Ensemble Work
Grosso gained recognition as an exceptional ensemble musician. He was part of a renowned piano trio in the 1930s with Oscar Borgert on violin and Thomas Teran on piano. In the 1960s, he joined the Guananabara Piano Quartet, which included Mariuccia Iacovino and pianist Arnaldo Estrella. From 1964, Grosso formed a long-standing partnership with pianist and composer Radamés Gnattali, performing works by Gnattali and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
